Routing Challenges

The project was straightforward and planned months in advance: move two (2) identical D-type boilers that measured 47' - 3" long, 20' - 0" wide, 16' - 4" height, and weight 240,000 lbs. Using a pair of Perkins' dual lane loading suspensions systems we were to haul them from Lincoln, NE through Iowa and Minnesota and deliver them into downtown Madison WI to the University right after Spring Road Restrictions were lifted in MN and WI. While certainly not an easy set of moves, they were, relatively speaking, a typical project for Perkins. Then the flood came.

Bridge Challenges

Perkins safely moved 462 pre-cast concrete bridge segments from a pour yard in Coates, MN for a civil contractor company on their massive bridge project, the reconstruction of the I-35W / Crosstown Highway (MN 62) interchange. This was one of the busiest "spaghetti junctions" in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area during rush hour.

Convoy Challenges

After competitive bidding Perkins STC was awarded a job from a major international freight forwarder to move two huge loads from a Houston, TX ocean terminal into northern Alberta. The project consisted of moving two separator vessels with net weights of 286,600 lbs and 275,625 lbs, respectively, imported from Italy for delivery to Canadian Natural Resources, Ltd (CNRL) Horizon Oil Sands Project located near Fort McMurray, AB.

Timeline Challenges

Perkins was contracted when an IL vessel fabricator needed to move a 270,000 lb grain-processing vessel to Keokuk, IA. Perkins Specialized Transportation Contracting is located within 600 miles of almost all these Ethanol, Bio-Diesel and other grain-based plants. And our unique transport equipment allows us to move large vessels through states with the most stringent superload requirements.
